Medicaid is now officially on the chopping block. Along with SNAP. House Republicans, led by Mike Johnson, have announced their intentions to move forward with a mammoth one bill budget plan that will supposedly sweep up key elements of Donald Trump’s fiscal agenda, enact tax cuts for the rich, and raise the debt ceiling.
And Medicaid is, by design, the main target of the House GOP’s federal spending cuts proposal. In fact, most of the cuts are to people who do not have enough income to survive.
Taxpayer money will instead be shifted to benefit the wealthy. Even though they pay less of a tax percentage than the middle class. Even though most of their corporations pay no taxes at all. Even though many of those same corporations are subsidized with taxpayer money.
Here’s a breakdown of the key elements of the budget blueprint, which the House Budget Committee released the text of Wednesday:
The Republicans plan to extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts that benefited wealthy Americans.
They propose $2 trillion in federal spending cuts.
Hardliners in the House Freedom Caucus are reportedly pressing for at least another $500 billion in spending cuts.
Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs are the programs most directly in the crosshairs.
The proposal directs the House Committee on Agriculture and the Energy and Commerce Committee to identify another $230 billion in cuts. The Energy and Commerce Committee oversees Medicaid spending and the Agriculture Committee has jurisdiction over SNAP and other nutritional programs.
The House Republicans also want to add stricter work requirements to recipients that still qualify for healthcare and food benefits. Even though most of the recipients are disabled, elderly, children, or family members already working as full time caregivers.
Will this pay down the National Debt? No. The Republicans plan to raise the debt limit by $4 trillion.
Trump, of course, vowed to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid at all costs.
The Republican Party has fallen into line, to rubber-stamp Trump's appointees. They have not raised a single objection to the indiscriminate gutting of government agencies by Musk and his Doge hackers. They have been silent on Trump's plans to send our military into Gaza, Panama and even Greenland. They have been fine with his plans to spend untold billions in taxpayer money developing luxury resorts in other countries. They have not even objected to his idea for America to "acquire" Canada.
So if they pass this budget, if they make even one single cut to Medicaid, then this falls on only ONE person, Donald J Trump. All he would have to do is make one post on Truth Social or X to stop it. If it passes, it is with his approval.
Project 2025 in action.
